*PRICE REDUCED!* Here is a rare opportunity to purchase one of the best-sounding loudspeakers ever designed, the Apogee Scintilla, fully restored to original specifications. I did most of the work as a labor of love, and as such, their story was followed by a large group of Apogee fans when the project was underway in 2006-2007 (I have a pdf of the Apogee Forum conversation that ensued after they were completed if anyone would like a copy). This is the 1-ohm model, the version many feel was the pinnacle of Apogee Acoustics' designs. For me, they still represent the most realistic illusion of a performance in a listening room I have ever heard–including modern, ultra-expensive models from some of the most famous brands in existence. As you can see in the pictures, I have them set up in a new dedicated listening room, and I welcome anyone to come and audition them so they can experience this impression for themselves. They are truly world-class loudspeakers, especially when driven by amplifiers capable of making them shine. I have been using Krell 350MCx amplifiers with great success.
In a stunning two-tone black and red, high-gloss automotive finish, they are gorgeous to look at, too. Every screw, bolt and nut was been replaced in a complete restoration, with stainless steel hardware used whenever possible. Some modifications to improve the build quality were done, including potting of the large inductors, Cardas binding posts, the internal crossover being rebuilt on custom PCB boards and, for esthetics, a subtle groove in the face of the covers to set off the bass and MRTW ribbon sections. One of the best additions is the incredibly robust, custom-made stand struts that make the speakers rock-solid and stand with the correct lean. Their performance is perfect, with deep, deep bass, a wonderfully sweet midrange and open, airy highs. I do encourage an audition, for if you have not heard the Scintilla speaker, you owe it to yourself if you can drop by. There are some signs of use on the sides/back, but the fronts are perfect, hence the 8/10 rating.
Considering their rarity, the level of quality displayed in their detailed, painstaking restoration and their performance compared to today's high-end speakers, the asking price is more than fair, and really represents a bargain for high-end audio. Conflicted as I am about selling them, I have decided to implement a larger speaker in my new dedicated listening room.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I am open to carefully delivering them within a 100 mile radius (I live in north county San Diego), but will ship anywhere *if* the buyer is willing to have sufficiently strong crates made (I have none) and pay for the shipping to their location (the speakers weigh about 150 lbs. each).
