This is a vintage Viking of Minneapolis reel to reel tape deck transport, Model #85. These came out in 1958 as a stand alone tape deck WITHOUT a built in pre-amp. The idea was you added your own pre-amp brand of choice, be it Viking's own or what have you. This is the quarter track stereo version and will also play half track tapes as well. The deck has a record and erase head as well as the playback head. No record function is built into the deck however, again, the idea was that your own pre-amp had that capability. Some scratches & surface rust from being in storage for a very long time. Non-original power cord, but it fits & works. Motors work fine and have been recently oiled and are quiet. The belts and pressure pads have been replaced. The pads were replaced with soft open cell foam, which is similar to what was original, as far as I can tell from pictures of others on the internet. The pinch roller has a small flat spot from being in the play position for a very long time, but does not seem to affect the way it plays, but it probably should be replaced. Pinch rollers are available from "the voice of music" website for a reasonable price. The upper head cover is long missing and the screws are non-original for the lower head cover, but do work. It does have the original reel hub holders, a rare thing on its own.

Sold in AS-IS condition with NO RETURNS due to the age of the tape deck and the nature of vintage electronics.

I will also include a printed copy of a scanned Sam's Service Manual for it.

Add your own pre-amp and you will have a good working vintage American made reel to reel deck for many years to come.
