JR-149s with Type 24 Crossovers

Jim Rodgers knew a thing or two about small monitor loudspeakers. You can learn much about this speaker at the British audio site, Pink Fish Media. Tony, the owner of the site, did quite a refurbish project with a pair of JR-149s.

A Classic and a superb sounding small monitor. Back in the day, they were an alternative to the LS3/5a … with deeper bass and a different presentation. I owned a pair from new in the late 70’s / early 80’s for almost four years … until one speaker was dropped to destruction by a careless sound engineer. I amplified that pair with a GAS Son of Ampzilla.

I have been using my present pair in a second system. To my ear, they are a sonic improvement over the original. The Type 24 crossovers (I believed designed by Jim Rogers) open the mid-range and eliminate the modest ‘honk’ in the original stock version. They image spectacularly. They have a deeper and more natural sounding bass than LS3/5a monitors.

I purchased this pair used, almost four years ago. They display pretty well. The foam surround is in good shape. The wood has some minor scratches. The aluminum stands that house the crossovers are scratched and slightly bent, but perform well to their purpose. They have worked without fail during the time I have owned them. I have the original crossovers and will include with the speakers.

This speaker does not require a sub-woofer. I have used a sub-woofer and it then becomes a true full range system. The JR-149s can be placed close to a back wall. I have amplified with both solid state and tube amps. They sounded incredible with the Nait 2 and a small custom PP 6V6 … but the space was not large and I don’t listen at higher volumes.

I will be selling much of my gear over the next several months. I’ve consolidated into a modest sized co-operative. The following will be coming up for sale. Quads Unlimited rebuilt 57s; Spendor SP1s; Quad II mono-blocks, refurbished; Quad 303 refurbished; Will Vincent PP 45 amp; Yamamoto A-08S clone SE 45 amp; George Wright AU-1000 pre; George Wright WPP-200C phono pre; Wavelength Cosecant DAC.
