This is the legendary line stage (no phono) version of the Modulus 3a. The L1 has a very nice headphone input in place of the phono section of the M3A, otherwise it contains the same circuitry. The M3A was SoundStage! reviewer Doug Blackburn's reference preamp after it bested an Audio Research SP11 to his ears. The series was selected as one of the 12 most significant preamplifiers of all time by The Absolute Sound. Stereophile listed it #31 in its list of 100 Most Important Audio Products of the Past 40 Years.
I would describe the sound as smooth and clear, with good detail and a hint of warmth in the midrange. This is not the overly euphonic CJ sound however, and stays more to the neutral/true side as reference pieces typically do. It made beautiful music with my Vandersteen speakers, and trounces anything i've heard near it's price point.
I have collected too much audiophile level gear and it is time to do some house cleaning (see my other ad for the Ayre preamp). I've been holding onto this as it was my first really nice stereo preamplifier, but it is too nice of a piece to be sitting in storage. Comes with the original box and manual. I am not sure of the age of the tubes, but they sound very good as they should.
