I did not ever get the chance to hear the Sony El Cassette because it lived such a short life on the market. Did any of you have experience with one of these?

I had one in the early '70's. It used 1/4" tape and ran at 3.75 IPS so it had much better fidelity than early cassettes were capable of. However, it missed its market in the '70's because with the advent of Dolby and high quality Chromium Dioxide and "Metal" cassettes, regular cassettes could achieve acceptable or even excellent sound rendering the ElcaSet to the dustbin of history.

Thanks. I knew very little about it. Of course, as you mention, cassettes came a long way after that. Once I calibrated my SAE deck to the TDK chrome tape, that's all I needed.

I have a vintage set up of TA-3200, TA-2000, ST-5150 running to SS-M7's and thought of getting one of these just for fun. . . but then realized I'd never find any tapes to play music on it!

Well...never say never but I just did a Search for "El cassette tapes" on ebay and got 1135 listings for Hispanic music!
