Musical Design? That is a new one to me, has any one heard one of the Vincent tube designs?

If you can find one either new or used, I suggest the Mystere CA11 tube preamp. Simply awesome equipment for $1,795 new. I own it and love it! It's quiet, has a great sound-stage, basic in design with limited features but beautiful to look at and enjoy. Just my $0.02.

It would be a serious mistake to overlook Decware. All hand crafted stuff that is way underpriced. As a result, there is a waiting list about 2 - 3 months long for their products.

Check out their Zen triode preamp model CSP2+ (http://www.decware.com/newsite/CSP2.html). I purchased this about 18 months ago, and have since purchased their Zen Torii MkII amp. I am absolutely thrilled each time I turn them on. I know that I sound like a shill for Decware, but they do not advertise and rely upon word-of-mouth. I am no shill. I just think they deserve to thrive.

You may want to consider a Dodd preamp. Gary Dodd makes excellent tube equipment and he has a killer battery preamp with variable gain that would blow away many of the commercial models you are considering. Besides with battery power you don't have to worry about line noise. He can be contacted at doddaudio@live.com and the website is doddaudio.com. Handbuilt preamps and amps of the highest quality. My only affiliation with him is as a satisfied customer. You can do a google search to read the rave reviews.

I have recommended this preamp to a friend of mine, and he truly enjoys the sound in his system, so you're not alone.

Keep an eye out for a Belles 21-A Auricap version. I was selling BAT products at the time it came out and it definitively outperformed the $10k BAT VK-51se in side by side comparisons on a system costing almost $100k where the preamp couldn't hide it's merits or lack thereof.

Last one I saw on A'gon was about $1100, and the best kept secret about them is that they are tube variable with a pair of tubes and they are sent out with tubes costing less than $20. Clinically accurate or warm and rich can be had with a tube change. I had a $300 cryo'd and super matched pair and the sound was staggering.

I actually sold a VK-51se to a guy who later bought one of these because of my recommendation when he bought the BAT and he acknowledged that it was in fact better. Absolute sound did a follow up review when I told them to compare it to a $10k preamp in a hardcore system and that review acknowledged it was more accurate than his reference Lamm costing well over ten grand, and that wasn't even the Auricap version which is better.

If you are able to find an Audible Illusions L2, act fast as they do go quick when they come up. The current version is the L3 and sells for $3695.00 USD. 8) 8) 8)

Happy Listening,

I tried one of Vincent's tube hybrids. Very colored sound (not in a nice tubey way). I did not care for it. I've found Jolida stuff has an honest tube sound although the build quality isn't the best around. I currently have a JD5T which is quite good for the low price.

I just bought a Dared MC-7P on eBay for less than $900 and it is pretty amazing.
I retubed it as follows:
4 - NOS Brimar E83CC/12AX7
1 - NOS Brimar CV4024/12AT7
1 - NOS(1940's) Ken-Rad VT-244/5U4G
1 - NOS Tung-Sol 6V6 GT/G
It is powering a pair of Scott Nixon 40w class 'A' solid state mono blocks(variation of 47Labs).
I would pit this preamp against any in the $2k range.
